NCAA Board of Directors Recommends Against One-Time Transfer Waiver

Today, the NCAA Board of Directors determined that changes to the waiver process as suggested by the Transfer Waiver Working Group are not appropriate at this time.

The BOD previously considered the recommended one-time transfer process that would allow all Division I student athletes in men’s basketball, women’s basketball, baseball, men’s ice hockey and football to immediately compete for their new school. The waiver criteria would be identical to the current transfer rules for student-athletes in other sports.

The working group concept would change waiver criteria to allow approvals for first-time four-year transfers in all sports to compete immediately if they:

· Receive a transfer release from their previous school.

· Leave their previous school academically eligible.

· Maintain their academic progress at the new school.

· Leave under no disciplinary suspension.

What does this mean?It means the current unsustainable transfer portal process will remain in place for the near future. The current system only allows transfers that have graduated to immediately play at their new school. This proposal would have allowed any student-athlete (i.e., younger athletes who have not graduated) to transfer and play immediately.
